SSVP housing has now been in operation for nine years. Property was purchased on Yates Street, with a generous estate donation in 1993. In 1999 the Yates Street Development passed public hearing at Victoria City Hall and construction began in the fall of 2000. The development is now the home of the 'St. Vincent de Paul Centre'. St. Vincent de Paul Centre is home to 43, 325 sq. ft. bachelor apartments which provide low rent housing for homeless at risk individuals. Every effort is maintained to provide balanced housing between men and women.
The staff at Housing do their best to aid the tenants feel at home. There have been a variety of activities that have taken place this past year in an attempt to continue building community within Housing. These programs included: cooking classes, craft workshops, yoga classes, floral design, movie afternoons, tenant luncheons, coffee socials and Christmas dinner. They are continuing to build a good community atmosphere within the building. The Housing is drug free and as well, requirements for Crime Free Housing certification have recently been completed. We have received our Crime Free Multi-Housing certification and will be posting a sign in the front lobby and at the back door indicating the building management follows crime free housing practices.
